The small âeâ symbol displayed after the weight of pre-packaged food is commonly thought to stand for âestimatedâ, but CHOICE has set the record straight.
The consumer advocacy group said that the âeâ symbol actually means that the product complies with the Average Quantity System (AQS).
The AQS is an internationally-agreed method of determining the size or quantity of pre-packed articles, and provides a 97.5% assurance that goods are the correct quantity.
Other products, like meat and cheese sold by weight, fall under a random weight system where products must never contain less than the amount listed on the label.
The expert at CHOICE said that âWhile it can be helpful to check a productâs weight yourself [to make sure it complies with the AQS], you need to take a few things into account.â
âIt is the productâs net weight that needs to be measured, and this includes anything that is naturally part of the product.â
The spokesperson added, âFor example, in mince meat, the blood contained within the soaker pad is considered part of the net weight.â
