Description

I wish to acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the Land throughout Australia and in particular to the Traditional Owners of Arnhem Land. I recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and culture and pay my respects to their Elders past, present and emerging. My name is Andrew Ucles, I’m a wildlife enthusiast and conservationist. Today I’ll be embarking on a mission to be the first documented man to walk solo across Arnhem Land. I plan to do this using traditional hunting methods taught to me by the Aboriginal people. Arnhem Land is located in the Top north eastern part of Australia. Imagine a landscape lost in time, an Amazon down under, fortressed with obstacle courses, giant swamps and escarpments, Arnhem Land truly is the outback labyrinth and most survival experts would say treacherous & impassable. I firmly believe we’re all part of the animal kingdom. The connection between man and animal, and man and nature innately exist within us all. I think this is an instinct and ability that has been suppressed or ignored through centuries of mankind striving to supposedly improve our quality of life. By walking Arnhem Land I hope to demonstrate how this connection can be re-established and inspire a younger generation to think about how they too can reconnect in their own way. I don’t expect others to go out and do what I do, but ultimately, I believe by understanding and respecting where we’ve come from, perhaps we’ll start to make better choices about where we are going. And maybe, just maybe, the world might end up a better place. In addition to fulfilling my own personal mission by walking Arnhem Land, I hope to shed some light on the environmental and social issues that face the Top End of our beautiful country.
