Keas stehen nun aber unter strengem Naturschutz. While a parrot mimics human voices and other sounds, the kea does not; its calls serve the social life of the group. Keas are highly intelligent creatures that continue to learn through observation throughout their lives. In their native New Zealand, however, they are less popular. Driven by curiosity, they damage cars and raid backpacks; there have even been attacks on sheep, prompting the government to cull 100,000 of the birds. Keas are now under strict legal protection.
