Description

Demand for protein fortified products may be up for several reasons. A Canadian food expert says meat counter economics could be pushing some customers away, as data shows beef has increased in price year-over-year by roughly 14 per cent, with chicken eight per cent and pork nine per cent. "All three components of the meat trifecta are more expensive right now: chicken, pork, and beef, which is rare. It's actually uncommon to see that," Dalhousie’s Agri-Food Analytics Director, Sylvain Charlebois said. According to Health Canada guidelines, the average adult needs about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. As Skye Bryden-Blom reports, people are searching for new sources of protein, however not all foods contain the nutrients whole foods can provide.
