On Wednesday evening a call came into the 1300KOALAZ 24hr hotline about a joey that had been thrown from it's mothers pouch after she had been hit by a car. A rescuer was dispatched immediately to rescue them and take the pair for assessment and pain releif at SASH a 24 hour emergency vet practice in Adelaide. Sadly, mum was too badly injured with a shattered jaw and internal bleeding to be saved. The joey, a little girl, appears to be uninjured but will undergo further observations and tests to be sure. Many thanks to Alex for stopping and calling this one in after the driver who hit them did not stop. Now, accidents do happen, we understand that, and at night in particular, koalas blend very well with the road, making them difficult to see, we DO NOT lay blame on anyone, but there really is no excuse for not calling someone to go out to the injured animal. Even if you cannot stop, you just need to give us the details of where the incident happened, and we can get someone to check on the animal's well-being. That goes for all animals. In this case, if Alex had not stopped, called, and waited with the koalas, we may have lost not just the mother who would have starved to death but also the joey who would have shared the same fate.
