Description
Working on "down". We've done about 8 sessions of this so far. We don't work on it every day as he needs time to settle, process and deal with all the things of his new life.
A few things to observe here.
I started the teaching this by luring from sit - he followed the treat on my hand into the down position. I'm not longer using the lure but he still needs the hand signal just now. You can see from the first minute he's trying hard to work out what gets the food, but he's still super interested in it, that he gets a bit overwhelmed.
Rather than "correcting" him with no reward markers (NRM), eh eh, "oopsie" or other nonsense, I changed my strategy to help him. Hand signal as he came round from the treat behind him.
I've also started to separate the verbal "down" from the hand signal. Verbal cues comes first, followed by the hand signal. If I follow this pattern, he'll start lying down on the verbal cue, at tjat point, I'll merge my body back into the standing position.
It's fluid, I wait to see if he can progress, if he can't, I adapt to help him out. There are a couple of times at (the first minute) then probably around minute 2, where i make mistakes. I don't want him paying for them, I help him out.
