Oregon Just Put A 70-Foot Blue Whale On Display‼️🐋 This massive skeleton is now on display at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon! It came from an adult male blue whale that washed ashore on the southern Oregon Coast back in 2015. A team of 45 people spent nine days recovering its bones from the beach. The bones were then wrapped in large nets and submerged in Yaquina Bay for more than three years, where marine organisms naturally cleaned them. The entire skeleton weighs around 5,500 pounds, and each of its lower jawbones measures nearly 18 feet long! Experts spent years removing whale oil, repairing damaged bones and reconstructing missing sections of the skeleton. It is now supported by a custom steel frame and positioned with its mouth slightly open, showing how a blue whale moves while beginning to feed on krill. Blue whales are the largest animals known to have ever lived, but complete skeletons like this are extremely rare.
