Description
Tri-State couple Jordan and Sierra Walters are dead and their two young children are recovering after a head-on crash in Dearborn County Friday evening.
"Jordan and I grew up our entire lives together. We talked multiple times every day, multiple hours," Jerad Walters, Jordan's twin brother, said. "[Sierra] was the kindest, sweetest, most pure-hearted person I've ever met in my life."
Jerad says Jordan, Sierra and their two children, 6-year-old Knight and 4-year-old Kyro, returned home from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Thursday. The following day, they were headed to Knight's all-star baseball game in Lawrenceburg. Indiana State Police say a 46-year-old man struck them head-on after crossing the center line on SR-350 in Dearborn County.
Jerad says Knight remembers everything that happened.
"He was able to crawl out of the car and go up — there was an embankment — saw a woman up there and said his brother needed help and his mom or dad wouldn't wake up," Jerad said.
Knight and Kyro were taken to Cincinnati Children's Hospital. Jerad says Knight had a lacerated spleen and arm surgery following the crash. Kyro sustained a fractured wrist. He says both boys are physically OK but are dealing with a tremendous loss.
"Definitely the two most important people in their life, they were. Jordan and Sierra were the proudest parents," Jerad said.
The family isn't far from the minds of the 8U baseball team Knight plays for and Jordan coached.
"I think, sometimes, we enjoy it more than the kids — Jordan especially being one of them. He was a mentor to all the boys he coached, so, not only did Knight and Kyro lose a father and a mother, but, honestly, our whole community lost a mother and father," said Derek Walker, president of Milan Summer Baseball.
Walker is also one of the coaches for the team. He says they considered canceling the game Friday after finding out the devastating news, but pushed forward.
"We're out here to support Knight and his brother, Kyro. You help him get through this however we can," said Walker.
Jerad also spoke about what comes next for his family.
"We'll just shower those boys with love and make sure they understand how much their parents loved them, how proud they were and just make sure they're taken care of," he said.
Jerad says both boys were able to leave the hospital on Sunday.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help the couple's two children, as well as pay for medical and funeral expenses. Walker says there's also the Jordan and Sierra Walters Fund at Napoleon State Bank to help support the family.
ISP said the investigation remains ongoing, and toxicology results are pending. The driver of the Ford F-150 suffered serious injuries and was taken to a Cincinnati-area hospital.
