The village is completely isolated from the rest of the world by a treacherous, rocky mountain range, making everyday life a brutal struggle. The turning point occurs when Manjhi’s beloved and pregnant wife, Phaguniya, slips from the mountain and dies while trying to bring him food. Devastated and fueled by grief and rage, Manjhi resolves that no one else should suffer her fate.
