Description
With some time before my next connection, I stumbled across a city festival on what was apparently a public holiday, where some interesting foot races were being conducted between various branches of enforcement (probably a recruitment effort). Crowds are not really my thing, though, so I left in search of a peaceful shrine, and a riverside walk. Then it was back to Sendai - but I wanted to record the west facing view when leaving the city (look closely and you can briefly see the Dai Kannon Colossus) so I continued north to Furukawa station, where I had planned to take a walk, but the weather closed in again. However I found there was a train heading into the hills, where there was a pin on the maps for a scenic gorge, so I took a gamble on the weather and my ability to get there.
My gamble paid off regarding the weather, but I discovered the train line was closed beyond Naruko-Onsen, so I was attempting to find a bus that could take me further - or just waiting the next train back to Furukawa. Luckily, some other visitors were making the same trip, and I was able to get a lift! Something that I would not be confident in accepting everywhere, but there is a different level of trust in Japan, even amongst tourists (though they were living and working here). Very fortuitous, as the autumn colours at Naruko Gorge were some of the most amazing of the entire holiday.
