Description

A Japanese red fox (Vulpes vulpes japonica, family Canidae) in the winter coat visiting twice a communal latrine of Japanese raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes viverrinus, family Canidae) in the windbreak forest of Japanese red-cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, family Cupressaceae). The fox sniffed at the dunghill on the snow-covered forest floor before leaving. Nine minutes later, the fox came back and went past along an animal trail without stopping at the latrine. Captured with my new trailcam in the cloudy early-morning (around 7:45 AM) of late-February 2025 in Japan. It was 2 degrees Celsius.
