But in rare cases, especially during the later years of the war, the consequences were far more severe. A handful of individuals were executed for remarks deemed politically subversive. Despite the risk, jokes circulated everywhere: on trams, in shops, at dinner tables. They mocked propaganda, food shortages, and the absurdity of total war.
