Matt built this 3-bedroom Earthship home with recycled tires, bottles and cans, and off-cuts from a log home builder. It has 10kW of solar panels, rainwater collection cisterns, indoor gardens, a wood-fired boiler, and passive cooling tubes.
The passive air conditioning and cooling system in his house works in a couple of ways. First, there are tubes installed in the berm (the mound) behind the house. One end of each tube is outside, and then the tubes run through the berm, and into the house at the base of the walls. The air in the tubes is cooled by the earth surrounding the tubes. Then, on the roof of the house, there are several whirly bird turbine vents that passively exhaust the warm air from the house as it rises. The difference in temperature with cool are near the floor and warm air near the ceiling creates the stack effect, which is a natural flow or movement of air through a building. This allows Matt's house to bring in cool air, and to exhaust warm air without added fans, systems, or energy.
After years of following the Earthship movement, Matt was able to take a course at the Earthship Academy with Michael Reynolds in New Mexico and then worked with Ted Elsasser to build his own passive solar home in Ontario, Canada.
