Description
Is the 2026 Chevrolet Silverado EV ready for a real winter? Forget the mild -5°C tests you see in Europe or the dry cold of the Prairies. Today, we are taking the Silverado EV Work Truck (WT5) into the mountains of Quebec for one of the harshest real-world range tests possible.
This isn’t a hypermiling run. We are driving a challenging, long-distance loop from Quebec City to Saguenay and back, fighting conditions that destroy EV efficiency. We’re dealing with the infamous "Heavy Cold" of the St. Lawrence Valley—where high humidity sucks the heat out of the battery and forces the HVAC to work overtime.
The Torture Test Parameters:
Extreme Cold: Temperatures ranging from -19°C to -22°C (-2°F to -8°F).
The "Defroster Tax": 80% Humidity means constant frost and demanding HVAC usage to stay safe and comfortable.
Rugged Terrain: Climbing from sea level to 800 meters (2,600 ft) through the Laurentian mountains, where regenerative braking is limited by the cold.
Real Driving: No coats in the cabin, no driving 10 under the limit. We are driving this truck exactly how a worker would use it.
We know the Silverado EV has massive range on paper, but how does the Extended Range battery handle the combination of steep climbs, deep freeze, and thick, humid air?
Join us on this epic drive to see if the Silverado EV can survive the loop or if the Quebec winter leaves us stranded.
