Description
Snow" Patrol - Day 9: Spa day! (Part 1) GreatLakes Bald EagleCam & North Sky Raptor Sanctuary update. Please watch the video to the end as there are photos and commentary update included throughout it.
"Yesterday was another full day for Snow as he received another round of physical therapy and bandage changes (a brief depiction of which leads off the video), his nebulizer treatment to assist in the mitigation of aspergillosis (middle portion of video), continued medications for the management of pain, inflammation, and possible pneumonia, and multiple hearty and nutritious meals, during which he began to re-display the self-feeding behaviors typical for a nestling!
In encouraging news, the orthopedic surgeon made the determination that Snow's ulna fracture has already progressed to the point that supportive bandaging could be removed! Through a combination of continued physical therapy, and the encouragement of natural movements and behaviors, the medical team sees indicators that the quickly developing bones will continue to heal in a manner allowing for the best opportunity of long-term recovery.
Both the wrist fracture (still splinted, and progressing) and the ulna fracture will continue to be monitored through manual palpation and radiography. As you can see, Snow's weight has remained relatively steady at just over 4.1kg, or 9lbs.
It has now been 2 days since Snow displayed signs of open mouth breathing (reference Monday's post for context), which is a positive indicator that the treatments being provided are aiding in the mitigation of the secondary infection! Treatment will continue for now, but the response is reassuring.
We can also say that Snow's condition going into yesterday was stable enough for the medical team to safely acquire a patient blood sample. This is an important step that will provide a number of data points, as the sample will be utilized for the purposes of lead testing, to run a CBC (complete blood count) and blood chemistry panel, and yes... to confirm whether Snow is male or female (which should take about a week)🦅
We know that followers of Snow's story will be particularly interested in that last one, so, rest assured that we will provide the results as soon as they become available♥
As far as today, Snow's condition has remained stable, with tomorrow bringing another round of physical therapy, breathing treatments, continued medications for the management of pain, inflammation, and pneumonia, as well as further observation and supportive care.

Many thanks to North Sky Raptor Sanctuary for their outstanding care for eaglet Snow & for the wonderful team at Great Lakes Bald Eagle cam. Snow is a warrior eaglet who has already beat defying odds of survival with the nest collapse and now is getting breathing treatments to add in fighting off any respiratory illness from the likelihood of having either pneumonia or aspergillosis. It is a very encouraging news update on Snow's progress!
