Mercedes was thrilled to return to winning ways at Austria’s Red Bull Ring, after Ferrari’s Barcelona breakthrough that ended its six-race hot streak; though the Scuderia usurped it again at Silverstone. Russell, who snagged a lucky home podium, was far stronger in Austria - where he proved his in-car intellect; starting with his Spielberg pole lap, which he kept, despite Max Verstappen’s Q3 off at turn eight. Red Bull’s Verstappen, starting fifth, was a factor in the race - having lifted himself into undercut range of Russell at the second stops, but he instead went long; and then had rear axle issues.
