In Tribute to Darryl: Smash Palace and Pub Choir Keep the Song Alive

Gisborne's vibrant community has found its beating heart in Smash Palace, a renowned pub and live music venue that has been captivating locals and visitors alike for over three decades. Owned and nurtured by Darryl and Kerry Monteith, Smash Palace stands as a testament to their unwavering passion for music and commitment to creating a welcoming space for all. What started as a humble establishment in 1990 has grown into an iconic gathering place that continues to evolve and inspire. Sadly, Darryl Monteith has recently passed away, leaving behind a powerful legacy of music, community, and connection. A seasoned musician, Darryl recognized the potential to infuse Smash Palace with his lifelong love for music. In 2017, inspired by the Pub Choir movement in Brisbane, Australia, he launched Pub Choir Gisborne with just a handful of enthusiastic singers. Over the years, that modest beginning blossomed into a thriving community of diverse participants, drawn together by the joy of singing. The essence of Pub Choir lies in the shared enjoyment of music, where everyone is welcome regardless of their experience or ability. Whether slightly off-key or perfectly in tune, each voice contributes to a collective harmony that resonates far beyond the venue's walls. Participants hail from all walks of life, spanning generations and backgrounds — a true reflection of the inclusive spirit that Darryl fostered. Darryl, with his signature sense of humor, often took song requests with a grain of salt, preferring to choose and master songs himself on guitar. He ensured that the choir’s repertoire spanned a wide range of genres and eras, always striving to include younger voices and contemporary favorites while staying true to the roots of community music-making. Creating an environment that was safe, welcoming, and vibrant for everyone — especially women and people of all ages — was central to what Darryl and Kerry envisioned for Smash Palace.
