I started my walk at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem and made my way all the way to the Damascus Gate, also known as Shaar Shechem. The route took me along the Roman Cardo, a street dating back to the second century, which today forms the backbone of the Muslim Quarter’s bustling market. Walking on the Cardo, you can still feel the layers of history beneath your feet, imagining merchants and citizens from centuries past moving along the same path.
Along the way, I passed station number seven of the Via Dolorosa, a moment that connects deeply to the story of Jesus’ last journey. The market itself is a hidden gem, less visited by tourists, where you can see what locals actually buy. Stalls overflow with spices, fresh produce, traditional sweets, textiles, and handcrafted items. It’s a sensory journey, with smells, colors, and sounds that make you feel truly immersed in daily life in Jerusalem.
The Damascus Gate, or Shaar Shechem, is one of the main entrances to the Old City. Its current Ottoman structure, built in the 16th century, stands above the remains of earlier gates, and it still serves as a vibrant entrance to the city. Just nearby, hidden in plain sight, are the remains of the triumphal arch built in honor of Emperor Hadrian, who rebuilt Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina in the second century. This gate marked the northern entry into the Roman city and is a fascinating piece of history that few visitors notice.
Walking from the Holy Sepulchre to Shaar Shechem along the Cardo allows you to experience Jerusalem in a deeply personal way. You pass through layers of history, from the Roman streets to medieval architecture, Ottoman fortifications, and the living markets of today. Each step tells a story, and every corner of the Muslim Quarter offers a new discovery. The combination of sacred sites, ancient streets, and lively marketplaces makes this walk unforgettable and gives a real sense of the city’s rich and layered heritage.
Visiting these sites, I felt connected to the past while experiencing the vibrant life of the present. The Cardo, the Via Dolorosa, the market, Damascus Gate, and Hadrian’s triumphal arch together create a journey that is both historical and alive. Jerusalem is not just a city to see; it is a city to feel, smell, and hear, and walking these streets brings that experience to life.
