Giant fossil discovery and carry - it weighed quite a bit

In this episode I recover an enormous 50 kg+ piece of petrified wood and carry it back to the car, showing the reality of working with large, heavy fossils in the field. Along the way I discuss what petrified wood can tell us about ancient environments, and how this specimen could be studied to identify the original tree species. Based on its features and geological context, it may represent an ancient Eucalyptus, raising interesting questions about past vegetation and climate in New Zealand. I also reference the PhD research of Mathew Vanner, whose work has been instrumental in identifying fossil wood from across New Zealand.
