Simon & Garfunkel were an iconic American folk-rock duo composed of Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel, known for their poetic lyrics, tight harmonies, and socially conscious songs. They rose to fame in the 1960s with timeless hits like “The Sound of Silence”, “Mrs. Robinson”, “Scarborough Fair/Canticle”, and the globally beloved “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Their 1970 ballad “Bridge Over Troubled Water” became their signature song, written by Simon and sung powerfully by Garfunkel. It conveys comfort and spiritual support during hardship, drawing influence from gospel music. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and also reached #1 in the UK, Canada, France, and New Zealand, and the Top 5 in at least ten other countries, becoming one of the best-selling singles of the era. After disbanding in 1970, they reunited for special performances, most famously the “Concert in Central Park” in New York City in 1981, which drew over 500,000 people and featured their greatest hits. This emotional live performance was recorded for the World Liberty Concert, a large-scale event held on May 8, 1995, in Arnhem to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Europe.
