Making a New Style of Bowl

Here are some somewhat new forms. The idea isn’t new at all as I’ve been adding vertical coils of clay to some of my decorative pots for years now. In this instance, I threw some simple bowl forms but I left some purposefully thick protrusions on the outer shape. Then, after the pieces dried out to leather hard, I was able to turn them back into more refined ledges.   I’ll see how these tree fire but I reckon I’ll switch up how I make these.   The first alternative technique would be to throw a much finer shape, let it dry a touch and then add soft coils of clay around the inside and throw them. This will leave me with a more consistent cross section and it means I can throw these with a fully curved interior.   The second method involves throwing the same form yet with much thicker upper walls. I’d then let the entire form turn leather hard and then I can trim away from the excess to reveal ledges wherever I want. Again, this allows me to keep a curvaceous interior and it opens up the possibility of slightly more creativity as I can easily reveal steps anywhere on the outer walls. Plus, it removes the slightly convoluted process of slipping coils in place and throwing them neatly.   Time will tell but I’m leaning towards the second option.   #oddlysatisfying #bowl #handmade #clay #craft
