A unhoused man who wasn’t even her owner risked everything to pull her from the hands of gang members, and as he tried to save her, they aimed their gun at her head—BANG. The bullet tore through this sweetheart’s eye and shot through her neck, narrowly missing her jugular. The man gathered this pup up into his arms, her blood spattering on the ground, and raced her to the nearest hospital. At the clinic, she arrived bleeding and gasping for air. The damage was catastrophic. Her eye was shattered. Her throat was so severely mangled and swollen that she could no longer breathe on her own. Vets intubated her and rushed her into critical care, fearing she’d stop breathing without life support. Ultimately, she had to be transported to an emergency vet hospital that could care for her overnight. Three vets rode in the back of the transport vehicle, manually keeping her alive on the journey over. This precious girl’s pain is beyond comprehension. Even sedated, her body trembles as she fights to hold on. For our rescue team, watching her struggle to survive after such cruelty is just gut-wrenching. We are so thankful to the brave souls who helped her and continue to help her. She wouldn’t still be here with us otherwise. We are desperate to save this sweetheart, but the fight to save her has only just begun, and we are already drowning in thousands of dollars worth of vet bills. She will need ongoing oxygen support, scans, and intensive care to survive. For a small nonprofit like ours, this cost is impossible to cover alone, but saying no is not an option when an innocent animal’s life hangs in the balance. Please, help us keep this pup alive.
