Boxing Footwork Drill Overview
Set up an agility ladder on the floor, or draw lines to create a ladder. Start in your boxing stance at the beginning of the ladder. One foot should be just outside the first square. The goal of this drill is to move in and out of the ladder squares while staying light on your toes.
Step-by-Step Boxing Footwork Drill
Step In and Out (Forward and Back): Step into the first square with your front foot and then immediately step out with the back foot. Repeat this pattern as you move forward square by square. Step back out as you exit. Make sure you stay in a strong boxing stance as you move.
Maintain Spacing: Notice that whenever you step, your feet stay apart. Keeping your feet shoulder-width apart means you are always ready to punch. If your feet cross or come together, you lose power and balance.
Lateral Movement: Once you are comfortable moving forward and back, add side steps. When moving to your left, step with your left foot first. When moving to the right, step with your right foot first. This prevents crossing your feet and helps you pivot quickly.
Adding Punches to the Footwork Drill
Once the footwork becomes second nature, start adding punches.
Jab on the Step: As you step forward, throw a jab with your front hand at the exact moment your front foot lands in the square. This syncs your punch with your movement.
Step-Through One Two Punch: Progress to a full one-two. Step in with the jab as the front foot lands, then immediately follow with a cross. Step back out after the cross. Focus on landing the front foot and front hand at the same time, then let your back foot follow.
Smooth Movement, No Sliding: Avoid dragging or sliding your back foot. Move both feet together when advancing or retreating so you stay light, balanced, and agile.
Key Boxing Footwork Tips
Stay on the balls of your feet for quick direction changes and explosive movement. Keep your hands up and body in boxing stance throughout the drill. Maintain balance by keeping your feet apart and finishing each movement in a position where you could throw a punch. Start slow to lock in proper form, then gradually increase speed for better agility and conditioning.
