Description
This kicks off ZEPPY NEW YEAR — an annual tradition on the channel where we ring in the new year with a deep dive into a Led Zeppelin album.
This is year four, and we’ve reached Led Zeppelin IV.
I’m covering the songs from this album that I haven’t reacted to yet, starting with Black Dog — one of the most deceptively confusing rock songs ever written.
On paper, this thing shouldn’t work.
The band drop out. The re-entries feel impossible to count. The groove constantly messes with your internal clock. Straight? Swung? Somewhere in between? And yet… it grooves harder than almost anything else in rock history.
In this video we get right into the weeds:
* Straight vs swung feel
* Why the band re-entries are so hard to count
* The role of anticipation in music (a real technical concept, not just a vibe)
Why Bonham makes chaos feel musical instead of messy
This is one of those performances where theory explains why it works — but never fully captures the magic.
Huge thanks to Susanne Lasch and Finesse Muse, my long-time co-conspirators, for keeping the ZEPPY NEW YEAR tradition alive for the fourth year running.
Led Zeppelin IV tracks covered this year:
