Description
Ełk is in the top right-hand corner of Poland.
The length of the active railway From Ełk To Sypitki is 16km.
The 1000 mm Gauge Railway began service in 1913. It connected the city of Ełk with the nearby villages and was used for both goods and passenger work. The narrow-gauge's staton was situated near Ełk's Standard gauge station. The lines infrustructure suffered much damage in World War Two. In 1950, it was relaid to 750 mm. The traffic on the line shifed its focus towards passenger work. 1975 saw the introduction of diesel locomotives.
Work to preserve the railway began in 1988. In 1991, the railway was entered into the Polish Register Of Monuments. In 1993 the first tourist focused services were introduced. In 2002, the Council of the Ełk City took over the management of the railway from the PKP (Polskie Koleje Państwowe)
