Labour says the UK's soaring disability benefits bill isn't the main problem, instead, ministers argue the system itself is "not fit for purpose." A government-commissioned review found that the current Personal Independence Payment (PIP) process is failing many disabled people, with claimants describing assessments as dehumanising and overly complex. While disability benefit spending is forecast to keep rising, ministers say the priority is creating a fairer, more effective system rather than simply cutting costs. The final recommendations are expected later this year and could lead to major reforms.
