Along with her spay and repair of her painful entropion (where the eyelid rolls inward and eyelashes rub against the eye), our veterinarian has also recommended removing the excess mammary tissue and stretched skin left behind after what was likely litter after litter of puppies. At first glance, this may seem like a cosmetic procedure—but for Phoenix, it’s much more than that. The mammary tissue hangs well below her abdomen, swinging as she walks. Over time, skin like this is prone to: • Chronic irritation and rubbing • Cuts and abrasions from catching on objects or vegetation • Contamination from urine, mud, and feces • Moisture becoming trapped between folds, leading to painful skin infections • Trauma from being stepped on while lying down or moving around Since Phoenix is already undergoing anesthesia for her medically necessary procedures, this is the safest opportunity to address a problem that could otherwise cause her discomfort for years to come. Will she also look different afterward? Yes. But this decision isn’t about vanity. It’s about giving a dog who has spent her life being used for breeding the chance to finally live comfortably, heal completely, and move forward without carrying unnecessary reminders of her past.
