A recent JAMA Psychiatry study from Finland tracked the academic progress of kids born in the 1990s all the way until age 20. They found that for kids with ADHD: The younger a child was diagnosed, the better they tended to do in school and the more likely they were to go on to higher education. Boys were most often diagnosed in early elementary school and girls in mid to late adolescence. Later ADHD diagnosis typically meant higher school dropout rates. But there’s a twist: Among those diagnosed after age 20, a later ADHD diagnosis was actually associated with more academic achievement. Those individuals may have had subtler symptoms early on, only struggling once academic pressure ramped up. So this isn’t just about when you’re diagnosed.
