From Westport, I drive down to one of the most significant Civil War battlefields in American history - Antietam National Battlefield in Sharpsburg, Maryland. September 17, 1862 marked the bloodiest single day in American history, and today this hallowed ground tells the story of sacrifice, courage, and the struggle that shaped our nation. I start at the excellent museum and visitor center, where artifacts and exhibits bring the battle to life. Then I drive and walk through the battlefield, visiting the powerful memorials that honor the soldiers who fought here from both North and South. The historic Dunker Church stands as a silent witness to the fierce fighting that swirled around it during the battle. Walking across the iconic Burnside Bridge is a moving experience. This stone bridge over Antietam Creek was the site of intense combat, and standing on it today, you can almost feel the weight of history beneath your feet.
