Punch, the juvenile macaque, who was abandoned by his mother after he was born at Japan’s Ichikawa City Zoo in July last year, found comfort in a toy orangutan given to him by the zoo’s caretakers. Since a near-identical version of the toy was found at IKEA, the stuffed animal has already sold out in three of the country’s ten stores—and although the orangutan costs just $16 firsthand, resellers are asking for far more on eBay. Some of the listings on the online marketplace are asking for $33 to $165 for the toy. The Ichikawa City Zoo has been so overwhelmed by Punch’s social media success that it had to implement entry restrictions due to the surge in visitors.
