Blessed Ferdinand of Portugal (5 June): Butler's Lives of the Saints

Blessed Ferdinand of Portugal, known throughout history as "The Constant Prince," stands as one of the most inspiring examples of Christian courage, sacrifice, and perseverance. Born into Portuguese royalty in 1402, Ferdinand lived a life of deep prayer, humility, and devotion despite the privileges of court life. When a military expedition against the Moors ended in disaster, Ferdinand willingly remained as a hostage rather than allow further suffering to fall upon his fellow countrymen. For six years he endured imprisonment, chains, disease, humiliation, and harsh labor, yet he never abandoned his faith in Jesus Christ. Even while suffering in dreadful conditions, Ferdinand cared more for his fellow prisoners than for himself. He repeatedly refused opportunities to escape if doing so would endanger others. His steadfast fidelity earned him the title "The Constant Prince."
