Description
Aerodynamics plays a huge role in modern time attack cars, but developing an effective package is far more complex than simply bolting on a larger wing.
We caught up with Kyle from JKF Aero to discuss how aerodynamic development actually works within the constraints of the World Time Attack Pro Open rule set, and how teams interpret those rules to design competitive aero packages.

Kyle explains how aerodynamic development begins by analysing the rule book and defining legality volumes in CAD that determine where components such as wings, splitters, and diffusers can be placed. Designs are then tested in CFD before moving into manufacturing.
The discussion also covers the balance between downforce and drag, why the underfloor can often contribute more downforce than a rear wing, and the challenges created by Pro Open regulations that require the centre of the car’s floor to remain open between the chassis rails.
We also look at how pressure taps are used to measure aerodynamic performance directly on the car, helping correlate real-world data with CFD predictions and validate whether the aerodynamic package is behaving as expected on track.
Finally, Kyle explains how the process moves from digital design to physical parts, using 3D scanning, CAD modelling, and composite manufacturing to turn aerodynamic concepts into real components that fit precisely on the car.
