Most surgeons won't tell you what happens in the 2 hours before they cut you open... Here's exactly what I do before every single surgery: 1️⃣ Review imaging one final time — X-rays, MRIs, everything. What I see in the OR should never surprise me. 2️⃣ Physically mark the surgical site — Yes, with a marker. Wrong-site surgery is a real thing and I refuse to be that story. 3️⃣ Run through the procedure mentally — Like an athlete visualizing the game before it starts. 4️⃣ Introduce myself to every person in that OR — I need to know my team. My team needs to know me. 5️⃣ Take 60 seconds of silence — No phone. No conversation. Just focus before I touch a patient.
