Description
In the first episode of our Andhra Pradesh Food Series, we begin our journey in Visakhapatnam, a coastal city where tradition and everyday food culture come together in the most vibrant way.
We started our food journey with a thoughtfully curated Dakshin thali at Welcomhotel Devee Grand Bay, where the restaurant brings together flavours from across South India while staying rooted in regional authenticity. The meal opened with comforting rasam and two varieties of adai as starters, setting the tone for what was to come.
The South Indian special thali featured an expansive spread, from Malabar parotta and appam with vegetable stew to Andhra-style kodi pulao and the robust, flavourful gongura mamsam. Alongside were classics like sambar and podi, with dishes like natu kodi reflecting the depth of Andhra’s culinary traditions. Each element of the thali offered a glimpse into the region’s bold, layered flavours.
We ended the meal on a sweet note with Bandar halwa and saggubiyyam-based dessert, both rooted in local traditions.
From there, we stepped into the streets of Visakhapatnam with our gracious host, Delfi, to explore the city’s everyday food culture. Our first stop was a popular punugulu stall, a beloved snack originally from Vijayawada, now just as cherished in Vizag. Crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, these bite-sized fritters are best enjoyed hot with chutney.
Next, we visited a well-known tiffin centre, where we tried ghee podi idli, soft idlis generously coated with spiced podi and ghee, and the Nellore karam masala dosa, known for its bold, fiery flavours and crisp texture.
We also stopped by Lalitha’s Bhimavaram Pickles, a place that showcases the richness of Andhra’s pickle traditions, known for their intensity and depth of flavour.
This episode is a small window into the diverse and deeply rooted food culture of Andhra Pradesh, from elaborate thalis to everyday street-side favourites.
