Why does it freak Americans out?

Why are Americans afraid of communism? Bc they associate with AUTHORITARIAN communism, tyranny, Stalin, Mao, etc. But what about libertarian communism? Anarcho-communism? Communal living? Permaculture? What about the early Christian church?
