Description

This is our last full sea day. New Zealand is nearly in sight, which means our Ross Sea Odyssey is coming to an end. After nearly 5,000 nautical miles we’re pretty much back home. My phone started picking up signal again which was the first sign that we were back in civilisation. The sun is now rising later and setting earlier which is a stark difference to the 24 hour sun we had in Antarctica. It was a great day for seabirds and we probably saw our largest diversity of species of the trip so far. Almost every day we’ve been doing @team_ebird seabird surveys which helps researchers identify the geographic ranges of different species which ultimately helps with their conservation. These were part of the comprehensive citizen science program on board and gave everyone the opportunity to get out on deck and learn something new about our flying friends.
