Description
With Queen Mary of Denmark visiting Australia this week, here is a wonderful historical moment connecting Denmark and Australia.
This 4K presentation of an Australian Colour Diary film from 1957 captures the visit of a youth gymnastics troupe selected from some of Denmark’s most talented young athletes. The group travelled internationally to promote physical fitness and cultural exchange.
The team included 15 young women performing rhythmic gymnastics and 17 men demonstrating strength, tumbling and coordinated group routines. Filmed at a Royal Australian Air Force base, the display features balance beam work, acrobatic tumbling, resistance exercises and high speed gymnastics performed with remarkable precision.
All members of the team were amateurs who funded their own travel, relying on admission receipts to cover the costs of the tour.
This historic footage has been digitally restored and presented in 4K, bringing new clarity to the original colour images from the Australian Colour Diary series.
The Australian Colour Diary series was produced by the Commonwealth Film Unit (later Film Australia) from the late 1950s into the early 1970s. Designed as short cinema newsreels, the films showcased Australian life, international visitors, cultural events, science, sport and industry in vivid colour.
Today the collection forms part of the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA), preserving important moving image records of Australia’s social and cultural history.
