Description
During a recent open day at RC TOPIA, several visiting RC enthusiasts had the opportunity to try something completely new: an RC rock crawling competition. After realizing that none of the drivers had ever participated in a competitive crawling event, I printed off a scoring sheet and set up a simple 10-gate course on the front rock pile at RC TOPIA. The goal wasn't to determine a winner, but to introduce everyone to the format and show how competitive crawling events are typically run.
Seven drivers took part throughout the day. Maurice judged the first run while Brent drove his Axial Capra equipped with rear-wheel steering. After completing his course, Brent took over scoring duties for Billy, who was driving the blue, yellow, and white memorial truck. In this video, I'm featuring only Brent and Billy, as each run deserved their own spotlight.
You'll also see the score sheet used during the event for reference. Since this was everyone's introduction to competition crawling, the scoring was kept casual and educational. We didn't total scores at the end, there was no course timer, and judging wasn't held to strict competition standards. The objective was simply to learn the format, tackle the rocks, and have fun.
As future competitions are held at RC TOPIA, we'll gradually introduce more of the traditional rules, including timed runs. One thing I learned from this first event is that as the number of competitors increases, the number of gates will likely decrease to keep the competition moving and ensure everyone gets plenty of time behind the wheel.
RC TOPIA is a private RC Adventure destination where invited visitors and guests can enjoy trails, obstacles, events, and new experiences during scheduled open days.
