In todays video: In Brisbane, Alexander Rasic, 26, was sentenced to nine years’ jail for the fatal one punch killing of Gold Coast mechanic Michael Hayes in 2023. The court heard the incident stemmed from a dispute over an unpaid car loan. Rasic pleaded guilty to unlawful striking causing death and will be eligible for parole after serving 80 percent of his sentence.
Nationally, Operation Ironside continues to move forward after a High Court ruling confirmed the admissibility of intercepted ANoM messages. Dozens of accused, including alleged senior organised crime figures, remain before the courts, with trials now progressing following years of legal challenges.
In Queensland, eight men charged over the 2020 execution style murder of ex Mongols bikie Shane Bowden have applied to have their charges dismissed, arguing the Crown’s case is weak and largely circumstantial. A decision is expected next month.
Tasmania Police, alongside federal agencies, charged seven men and seized nearly $2 million in cash, cocaine and silver bars following an eight month drug trafficking investigation. Authorities say the arrests significantly disrupted a major drug supply network.
Multiple firearms and drug crackdowns were also carried out. In the Riverina region, Operation SAFE led to the seizure of 28 firearms and more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition, with two people refused bail. On the Sunshine Coast, a Nambour man was charged with 15 offences after police seized firearms, drugs, cash and encrypted phones.
Queensland Police also charged 11 people linked to the Mongols MC following raids across Far North Queensland, seizing drugs, firearms, cash and vehicles alleged to be purchased with criminal proceeds.
Further enforcement included Operation Xray Crosscut in Rockhampton, resulting in 80 arrests and more than 400 charges, and the interception of a New Zealander at Sydney Airport accused of attempting to import $10 million worth of heroin.
In Sydney’s south west, seven men were detained during a Tactical Operations Unit response in Liverpool, though police confirmed no link to the Bondi attack.
Finally, the Australian Border Force dismantled a major illicit tobacco network on the Gold Coast, seizing more than one million illegal cigarettes and thousands of vapes, with investigators warning that profits from illicit tobacco directly fund organised crime.
