The Han Dynasty: How the Chinese Identity Was Born

While Rome built roads and legions in the West, the Han Dynasty did the same in the East — and, unlike Rome, left a unifying legacy. From the Qin it inherited the empire; with Liu Bang the dynasty was born, and with Emperor Wu came expansion, the Silk Road, and a strong state, funded by monopolies and guided by a meritocratic bureaucracy. Amidst inventions like paper and crises such as usurpations and revolts, the Han collapsed in 220 AD, but they had forged an identity: being "Han" became synonymous with being Chinese.
