Women cyclists named as the most inspirational in London say that safer routes are vital to getting more women on two wheels. Transport for London has named ten of its Santander-sponsored “Boris bikes” in honour of the women to celebrate International Women’s Day. It came as TfL said a major safety transformation of Lambeth bridge – the deadliest location for cyclists in London, where art expert Moira Gemmill was killed by a HGV more than a decade ago – is due to be completed next month. The named Boris bikes were unveiled beside the Olympic velodrome on Tuesday at an event attended by eight of the recipients. More than 150 people were nominated by the public, praising women who had led the way for others and community campaigners who worked to make cycling safer and more inclusive.
