#gridsparta #bikies A Black Power gang member has been jailed after firing a gun during a confrontation with rival Mongrel Mob associates in the busy carpark of Middlemore Hospital, an incident that quickly spiralled into a dangerous high speed chase through South Auckland. Tipene Kiel Pirini, a patched black power member , appeared in the Manukau District Court, where he was sentenced on his 35th birthday, after pleading guilty to firearms offending, that was linked to the January incident. The court heard Kiel Pirini had earlier attended Middlemore Hospital for treatment to a hand injury, only to return less than an hour later. Just minutes before his return, a patched Mongrel Mob member and several associates had arrived at the hospital carpark. CCTV footage played in court, showed Kiel Pirini driving slowly past the rival group multiple times, appearing to scope out their location while the carpark remained busy with hospital staff, patients and visitors. He then leaned out of a BMW and fired a shot in close proximity to pedestrians. One civilian was forced to take evasive action as the gunshot rang out in the public space. The situation escalated almost immediately, with both groups fleeing the scene and engaging in a reckless pursuit through south auckland streets and surrounding suburbs. During the chase, the vehicles reached high speeds, drove on the wrong side of the road, ran red lights and continued to exchange gunfire, placing countless members of the public at risk during peak evening hours. Later that night, his vehicle was located outside a south auckland address, showing clear signs of shotgun damage. A search of the property uncovered two firearms hidden inside the house, further compounding the seriousness of the offending. The court was told the actions created an extreme and unacceptable risk to public safety, particularly given the setting of the initial shooting at a major hospital. The judge noted the incident could easily have resulted in serious injury or loss of life to completely innocent people. While Kiel Pirini accepted responsibility for his actions and acknowledged the danger posed to members of the public, the court was told he expressed no remorse toward the mongrel mob members involved in the confrontation. His background, including a troubled upbringing and early exposure to gang life, was considered, as were his guilty pleas. However, the judge declined to reduce the sentence for remorse.
