Tyson Daniels 37, a senior figure within the new zealand Comancheros, has pleaded guilty to his role in a major methamphetamine conspiracy linked to a failed drug importation.
The case centres on a 200kg shipment of methamphetamine that was smuggled into New Zealand and stored inside suitcases hidden in a shipping container. The operation was uncovered in December 2024 after two men broke into the container at the port of Tauranga, removed five suitcases, and fled in a vehicle. Police later stopped the car using road spikes on the Eastern Link highway and recovered the drugs, along with tools allegedly used in the break in.
Investigators say though Daniels was not involved in the initial container breach, but was the part of the wider plan or the maastermind, to obtain and distribute the drugs. He later admitted conspiracy to possess methamphetamine for supply after originally facing a more serious importing charge that carried a potential life sentence. The revised charge carries a maximum penalty of 14 years.
