These Will Swarm You At The Beach‼️😱 These tiny creatures are shoreline isopods, commonly called sand piranhas! They usually stay hidden underneath seaweed, driftwood, rocks, and other material that washes onto the beach. But the moment they detect a food source, dozens of them can quickly gather and begin feeding. Isopods have existed for more than 300 million years, long before dinosaurs appeared! And despite their terrifying nickname, shoreline isopods are extremely important. They help clean up fish remains, decaying seaweed, and other natural material before it builds up along the shoreline. They also recycle nutrients back into the coastal ecosystem and provide food for fish, birds, and other beach animals.
