Description
In this video, we uncover the hilarious and fascinating true story behind one of the most iconic logos in tech history!
Back in 1996, a student networking club called "VIA" at the École Centrale Paris was struggling with a painfully slow campus network. To get funding for faster internet (mostly for gaming!), they pitched a "serious" project to the university: streaming satellite TV across campus computers. They called this project VideoLAN Client—or VLC for short.
But where did the logo come from? It turns out, these students had a wild weekend tradition. After late-night parties, they would steal traffic cones from the streets and bring them back to their dorms. It even became a competition to see who could collect the most! When the VLC project was finally completed, they needed a logo, and they chose the traffic cone that had become a staple of their dorm rooms.
Despite their mischievous cone-stealing days, these same students changed the world in 2001 by releasing the VLC Media Player as a free, open-source software for everyone to use.
