Bae was found on his absolute last leg as a stray, emaciated and riddled with heartworm disease. We stepped in to keep him out of a shelter where he risked euthanasia. When an Animal Control officer called us about this boy, they asked if we could take him rather than send him to their shelter, fearing he would not make it out alive with their overcrowded kennels and limited resources. We said yes without hesitation, and that is how Bae came into our care. At just 2 or 3 years old, Bae has already endured so much. He came to us with a body condition score of 1, the lowest possible rating, meaning he is dangerously emaciated and on the verge of death. To top that, his body is covered in fleas, leaving him itchy and uncomfortable, and he has tested positive for heartworms. Yet we mean it when we say that, despite everything, Bae is very, very sweet and loving. He gives kisses and wags his tail for everyone he meets, as if he already knows he is finally safe. But Bae has a long road ahead. He needs heartworm treatment, flea relief, and careful refeeding to rebuild his fragile body. This is the most important step in his recovery, because it isn't as simple as just giving him a ton of food and letting him chow down. He needs consistent nutritional help, small meals fed multiple times a day, and someone on hand in case he starts to experience any refeeding syndrome symptoms.
