Opposition leader asked what makes someone 'Australian'

The Opposition leader has faced questions about what constitutes an Australian and who would be cut off from welfare payments under its recently announced budget proposal. Opposition leader Angus Taylor was asked whether permanent residents, many of whom consider themselves Australians, would have to become citizens to receive benefits. “Then pledge and become a citizen,” he replied. In another press conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese questioned Taylor’s distinction between Australians and migrants. “Some of the giants of business in this country came here as refugees and as migrants,” he said.
