Description

Curious about my new book The Spirit of Birds available October 20th 2026? This is one of over 80 stories you’ll find living among the pages. Pre-order www.thespiritifbirds.com From a distance, I watched a Bald Eagle frantically attacking a tree branch. “What the hell was going on ?” I thought. As we got closer, I peered through my zoom lens and the misty rain. Was the bird stuck? “Sam! Get closer!” I yelled. The lodge owner and boat captain eased the boat in gear and we crept in. The odds of this bird placing one perfect-sized talon in the space between those two branches must have been astronomical, but there it was and it was definitely stuck. I looked back at Sam and said, “It’s stuck in the branch.” There was a long, uncomfortable silence as we both searched for a solution. I broke the silence and said, “We can’t leave it there like that.” I could see Sam’s gears turning as he chewed on his bottom lip. “Let’s try this!” He said handing me a rope with a small weight on one end. “I’ll drop you on the rocks. Get under the bird and throw this rope up and over the branch. Once you get it over the branch, yank it as hard as you can and see if you can snap it off the tree!” It sounded like the perfect plan, and that’s about as far as we got in the thought process. The next thing I knew, I was standing on a slippery, barnacle-covered slab of granite looking at a very large, very angry, totally exhausted eagle that was hanging upside down, swaying back and forth like an old clock’s pendulum. With every second that went by, this bird’s life was in danger. I looked down to be sure of my footing. Ice-cold water rushed up my legs as a small wave from the flood tide pushed in. Two steps behind me, the rocks disappeared and massive whirlpools threatened. Facing the eagle seemed like a better idea than drowning, so I slowly made my way to the tree. Once I was under the tree, I took a deep breath, readied the rope, and made damn sure not to look up. I didn’t think it would be a good idea to make eye contact. The bird sprang to life. Fight or flight. Fight or flight. I kept my head down and listened intently. The sound was indescribable as the eagle’s massive wings moved so much air around me that I started to question my balance on the rocks. I stayed put and waited for the bird to relax. Ten, fifteen, twenty seconds went by without a sound. I slowly turned my head and looked up, fully expecting to see a dead bird hanging above me, but the branch was empty. The bird was gone. It had chosen flight over fight. That rush of wind that surrounded me a few seconds prior? That was the bird’s freedom. I will never forget the sound of the air moving through those feathers as I stood on that rock questioning my own sanity. Sometimes all you have to do is try to help and the universe will do the rest.
