Description

A Walk Into Nerja on Three Kings Day, Nerja, Andalusia, Spain - 5 January, 2026: https://youtu.be/ubdaQG-ZQZ0 . Nerja is a coastal town located in the eastern part of the Costa del Sol, within the province of Málaga in southern Spain. It lies approximately 50 kilometres east of Málaga city and sits between the Mediterranean Sea and the foothills of the Sierra Almijara mountains. This geographical setting gives Nerja a combination of coastal landscapes and nearby inland terrain that shapes both its appearance and daily life. The town has a long history, with evidence of human settlement dating back thousands of years. One of Nerja’s most significant historical and natural features is the Caves of Nerja, discovered in 1959. These extensive caves contain large caverns, stalactites, and stalagmites, as well as archaeological remains and prehistoric cave art. The caves are located just outside the town and are among the most visited sites in the region. Nerja’s town centre retains much of its traditional Andalusian character. Narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and small plazas are common, particularly in the older areas. The Balcón de Europa, a prominent viewpoint overlooking the Mediterranean, is one of the town’s best-known landmarks. It occupies the site of a former fortress and offers views along the coastline in both directions, making it a central point for visitors and residents alike. Beaches are a major feature of Nerja, with a mix of sandy and pebble beaches spread along the coastline. Popular beaches include Burriana, Calahonda, and El Salón, each with different characteristics in terms of size, access, and surrounding facilities. Many beaches are located close to the town centre, while others are set in small coves backed by cliffs, offering a more sheltered environment. Nerja benefits from a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm summers and relatively mild winters. This climate supports year-round tourism as well as local agriculture in the surrounding area, including the cultivation of fruit and vegetables. The town’s location near the mountains also makes it a starting point for walking and hiking routes into the nearby natural parks. Transport connections link Nerja to the wider Costa del Sol. Although the town does not have its own railway station, it is served by regular bus services connecting it to Málaga, Málaga Airport, and neighbouring towns. Road access via the A-7 motorway makes Nerja reachable by car from across southern Andalusia. Tourism is an important part of Nerja’s economy, but the town also functions as a residential community with schools, healthcare facilities, and local services. Its blend of historic character, coastal scenery, and access to natural landscapes makes Nerja a well-established destination within southern Spain.
