Why the egg industry shreds newborn baby chicks

Every year millions of baby chicks are born into the egg industry. These chicks have been selectively bred for one purpose - to lay eggs. But obviously only females can lay eggs...so what happens to all the males? Well, according to the egg industry, male chicks and any other chick deemed unfit for egg production are considered waste products and must be disposed of.
